HOW TO CHOOSE A KITCHEN SINK

Everything but the kitchen sink? We think it should be everything including the kitchen sink! If the home revolves around the kitchen, the kitchen may surround around the cook. How better to serve your cooking and cleaning needs than with the ideal kitchen sink for your lifestyle? Before you select “the one” you’ll need to evaluate a few features and characteristics that are specific to you and your needs:

Here's what to consider when choosing a new kitchen sink:

SIZE

What size kitchen sink is right for you?

The first and potentially most important element to consider when selecting a sink is its overall size. Large, small, or somewhere in between, your sink must fit into the allotted space on or inside your counter and cabinet. Larger sinks, while providing more space for washing dishes, may take away critical counter space that tend to be scarce in smaller kitchens. Smaller sinks, on the other hand, may be ideal for individuals or those who do not use the kitchen for extensive cooking. Whatever your setup, it’s important to consider your cabinet’s dimensions, as there are occasions when larger sinks will require custom-sized cabinets.

BOWLS

Consider the number of bowls you need
When considering if you want a single or double-bowl sink, it’s important to think about its actual use. Do you wash a lot of baking pans, or do you tend to use smaller frying pans in your food prep? Those who use larger pots and pans may want to consider a large, single bowl sink or even a dual-level sink with enough room to lay the pans down to soak. Many dual-level sinks feature an oversized bowl in which cookware can wash and soak; this type of setup also includes a smaller basin for rinsing or for use with a garbage disposal. For those who need to simultaneously wash and dry cookware and dishes, a double-bowl farmhouse sink like the one displayed below may be the way to go. One bowl can be used for food prep and the other for clean up.

WHAT SINK FEATURES WILL BEST MEET YOUR NEEDS?

Steep, straight side walls
Deeper bowls can accommodate soaking and rinsing large pots and pans. A relatively flat sink bottom increases usable bowl space and allows dishes and glasses to be safely stacked.

Off-set Drains
Placing the drain to one side provides more flat space for stacking dishes and glasses and creates more usable space under the sink. Offset drains also allow water to drain, even if a large pan or tray is soaking in the sink.

Web/Divider
For double bowl sinks, make sure the web divider between the two bowls is lower than the outside sink walls. This will provide overflow protection by allowing water to flow from one bowl to the other.

WHAT MATERIAL WILL SUIT ME BEST?

COUNTERTOP OR UNDER THE COUNTER?

Sinks that are installed underneath the countertop mount directly to the underside of a countertop. This installation is flush mount, making it easy to clean. It is essential to consider the type of countertop in your kitchen when opting for this type of sink in order to ensure that the edges around the sink opening can be finished. A sink installed above-the-counter, such as a farmhouse style sink, on the other hand, can be particularly visually appealing and add visual dimension to an otherwise monochromatic or one-dimensional kitchen.

SELF-RIMMING
Self-rimming sinks have rounded corners and mount on the surface of the countertop material. This is the easiest type of installation, requiring only adhesive caulk to seal the sink in place.

THE FAUCET
The type of faucet you choose dictates the number of holes you need in your sink. Choosing the two in tandem is therefor a good idea to keep your kitchen renovation as efficient as possible. When selecting the proper sink and faucet combination, it’s also important to consider the need for additional holes for accessories such as soap dispensers or pull-out hand sprayers.
